137th New England Spring Flower Show
2008-03-16
It's an annual rite of spring and one
of Boston’s most enduring traditions. I have
been working in the show's lighting
department for the past 13 years. I also have
been photographing it for Nancy Goldstein, the
show's lighting designer for the same 13
years. This year was no exception.
Check out the slideshow with more photos that I took.

Raymondskill Falls
2008-03-09
Milford,
PA - Raymondskill Falls is a series of 3
cascades/waterfalls dropping close to 150
feet. It's the tallest waterfall in
Pennsylvania, and only 4 feet shorter than
Niagara Falls. It's one of my favorite places
to stop (Grey Towers would be
the other) on my way through the Delaware Water Gap
National Recreation Area.
This shot is from above the falls, so it does not show the falls themselves. Typically I get there lat in the day and the sun is behind the falls.

Burns Dinner
2008-02-23
Ayer, MA
- Pipe Major Ken Smith is helped into his
uniform by his wife Susan. Ken played the
bagpipes during the 1st Burns Supper that was
held at Thirty-One Main honoring Robert Burns
and his poetry, wit, and songs. Burn's was
the first Poet Laureate of Scotland.
Burns Night, effectively a second national day in Scotland, is celebrated on 25 January with Burns suppers around the world, and is still more widely observed than the official national day, Saint Andrew's Day, or the proposed North American celebration Tartan Day. The format of Burns suppers has not changed since Robert's death in 1796. The basic format starts with a general welcome and announcements followed with the Selkirk Grace. Just post the grace comes the piping and cutting of the Haggis, where Robert's famous Address To a Haggis is read, and the haggis is cut open. The event usually allows for people to start eating just after the haggis is presented. This is when the reading called the "immortal memory", an overview of Robert's life and work is given; the event usually concludes with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

Sports photography
2008-01-03
Well I
tried my hand at sports photography tonight.
I have never (truly, I mean never) shot
sports before but I was going to a Bruins
hockey game and thought it would be a good
experience. Since I was not on an assignment,
I needed to sneak my camera in. This was a
lot easier since getting the f1.4 50mm for
christmas. It's a much smaller lens than my
f/2.8 16 to 35mm. Plus the 50mm is fast and
sharp, so it's fairly good for shooting
sports.

Typical... last night there
was a five alarm fire in my town. The problem
was, I was driving back from Pennsylvania and
the fire fighters had the fire 'knocked down'
by the time I got there.
More typical... is the fact that instead for shooting what little action there was putting the rest of the fire out. I took pictures of things relating to ICS (Incident Command System).

EMS in Ireland
2007-09-02
In the
August issue of JEMS there is a story
about EMS in
Ireland that I
did all the photography for.
As a contributing photographer for JEMS and my wife being from Dublin, I took a great interest in Irish EMS. Until recently, there was no such thing as a Paramedic in the Republic of Ireland (but there was in Northern Ireland). However, like many places in the U.S. in the late 1970s and early 80s the only thing holding them back was the bureaucratic red tape. But it was coming... With lots of reverse immigration because of the Celtic Tiger and the anticipation of a Paramedic program, I was seeing and hearing of many Paramedics here in the U.S. that were Irish nationals returning to Ireland. So I pitched the idea for a story to my editors and they gave it the go-a-head.
I posted some questions on irishambulance.net inquiring about someone who had experience in pre-hospital care in both Ireland and the U.S., as well as being a third rider taking pictures. Vaughan Mason replied and fit the bill perfectly. He was an EMT with Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB), then came to the states to attend the Northeastern University Paramedic program in Burlington MA. While in the U.S. he also worked for Action Ambulance in Wilmington MA Vaughan returned to Ireland and is now an Advanced Paramedic with DFB.
Taking pictures was a different story... unless you are a doctor or medic currently working in Ireland, it's simply not done. being a third rider simply is not done. Not even a U.S. NREMT medic can get in a rig.

Stringer
2007-08-22
I'm now a
Stringer* for Nashoba
Publishing. They
are a division of Media News
Group. It's
typical small town news coverage... the
selectmen meeting, the church social, a
fundraiser, etc. I'm doing it to get more
experience in main-stream photojournalism.
Picking up some extra cash does not hurt
either. It may not be AP or the Boston
Globe with national or even state news,
but I'm really enjoying it.
